What Is The Difference Between A Bed Frame And Bed Foundation?

A bed frame is the outer structure that supports and elevates your bed that holds the foundation and mattress. A bed foundation sits directly under the mattress, which then sits on a bed frame, providing a supportive sleep system and preventing sagging. A foundation can be a box spring, slatted base or solid platform. The Big Fig Bed Frame is a metal bed frame that works best with an accompanying Big Fig Heavy Duty Foundation or Big Fig Ultra Low Profile Foundation.

Do I Need A Bed Frame And Mattress Foundation?

Not always. A bed frame and foundation serve different purposes, but whether you need both depends on your sleep setup. A bed frame holds your mattress off the floor under your foundation adding height and style, while a foundation provides a sturdy, even surface for your mattress. Some bed frames, like the Big Fig Platform Bed, are designed with built-in support, so you don’t need a separate foundation (bonus points for easy assembly). But if you have a more traditional metal bed frame that doesn’t offer enough support, you’ll likely need to add a foundation to prevent sagging and extend your mattress’s lifespan. The key is to ensure your mattress has a solid, supportive base—whether a foundation, a platform bed or a reinforced frame. And, of course, pair your accessory of choice with a Big Fig Mattress.

Can I Put My Mattress Directly On The Metal Bed Frame?

No, a Big Fig Mattress cannot be placed directly on the Bed Frame. A foundation is needed to support the mattress with a traditional metal frame. Learn more about what existing bed and mattress accessories work best with Big Fig products.
